Equal rights, but different pay?
Thousands of mainly female Next shop workers brought an equal pay claim after being paid less than predominantly male warehouse workers doing work found to be of equal value.
The workers originally won on the issue of basic pay, but Next appealed, and has now won that appeal.
The latest ruling says that market forces can potentially justify a difference in pay, even where the work is of equal value.
It’s a significant decision that could affect other equal pay claims across UK retail.
But it’s not over - the workers now plan to appeal.

Should misogyny be treated as a hate crime? ⚖️
Today Parliament will debate a petition signed by more than 114,000 people calling for misogyny-motivated crimes to be recognised as hate crimes, alongside tougher action on online abuse.
The law is already changing, with sex set to become a protected characteristic for certain aggravated hate crime offences, but campaigners argue it doesn’t go far enough.

Should a dog that kills another pet be treated as legally dangerous?
Karen Hawthornwaite is campaigning for a change in the law after her dog, Benji, was fatally attacked by an off-lead dog.
Despite CCTV footage of the incident, police reportedly concluded that the attack did not meet the legal threshold for prosecution under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
Karen says this exposes a serious gap in the law: when a dog attacks another animal, the consequences for the dog and its owner may be limited - even where the attack is fatal.
She is now calling for serious dog-on-dog attacks to be investigated and prosecuted more consistently.

Should social media have a legal bedtime?
The UK Government is considering a social media curfew for 16 and 17-year-olds.
Under the proposals, apps could automatically switch off between midnight and 6am - and addictive features such as autoplay and infinite scrolling could be disabled by default.
The aim? To protect teenagers’ sleep, focus and mental wellbeing.
But there’s a catch: young people would still be able to opt out. So would this really protect teenagers online - or would it simply be another setting they can switch off?

Big changes are coming for renters with pets.
Under the Renters’ Rights Act, landlords will no longer be able to unreasonably refuse a tenant’s request to keep a cat or dog in their rented home.
That could make a huge difference for millions of renters who currently face blanket “no pets” policies.
Landlords will still be able to refuse in some circumstances — but they will need a valid reason.
So, is this a fair balance between tenants’ rights and landlords’ concerns? Or should landlords still have the final say?

Could refugees soon have to repay the UK Government? ⚖️
A major change to asylum law is being proposed.
Under the new Bill, refugees who are granted asylum may have to repay the cost of state-funded support before they can qualify for permanent settlement in the UK.
The Government says the repayments would be means-tested, meaning only those who can afford to pay would be required to do so.
Supporters say this could make the system fairer. Critics say it could make it even harder for refugees to rebuild their lives after fleeing conflict, persecution or danger.
For now, this is not law yet. The Bill is still going through Parliament.

After 200 years, rough sleeping is no longer a crime in England and Wales. -⚖️
The Vagrancy Act 1824 has officially been repealed, meaning people can no longer be arrested or prosecuted simply for sleeping rough or begging. Instead, the government’s focus will shift from punishment to prevention, with greater emphasis on support and tackling the root causes of homelessness.
New laws will still allow police to act against organised begging, trespassing to commit crime, and other criminal behaviour, but homelessness itself will no longer be treated as a criminal offence.

Japan has introduced joint custody after divorce.
Until now, Japan’s law generally required one parent to have sole custody after divorce - meaning one parent had the main legal responsibility for the child.
From 1 April 2026, divorced parents in Japan can now choose joint custody, meaning both parents may share legal responsibility for important decisions about their child’s life, such as education, health and welfare.
It does not automatically mean a 50/50 split of time, but it does mark a major shift towards both parents remaining legally involved after divorce.
Japan was previously the only G7 country without joint custody after divorce.

Car jammers, relay devices and CAN bus hacking tools are now specifically illegal in the UK --
Previously, police often had to prove that these electronic devices were actually intended to be used for vehicle theft - despite them commonly being linked to organised car theft gangs.
Under the new Crime and Policing Act 2026, that has now changed.
It is now a criminal offence to:
⚖️ Own
⚖️ Make
⚖️ Import
⚖️ Sell
⚖️ Or supply electronic devices designed or adapted to steal vehicles
These devices are used to unlock and steal cars within seconds, often without needing physical keys.
Around 40% of vehicle thefts in England and Wales are now estimated to involve electronic theft devices.
The penalties?
⚖️ Up to 5 years in prison
⚖️ Unlimited fines
The Ford Fiesta has reportedly been one of the most commonly targeted vehicles in the UK for this type of theft.

Big changes are coming to student renting in England. --
Under the Renters’ Rights Act (from May 2026), students will no longer be locked into fixed 12-month contracts. Instead, tenancies will become rolling, meaning students can leave with just two months’ notice. Not to mention, in shared houses one tenant ending the agreement could bring the whole tenancy to an end.

Jade’s Law: A Game-Changer for Protecting Children
For years, families have faced the unthinkable - losing a loved one to domestic homicide, and then battling the courts to remove the perpetrator’s parental rights.
That changes with Jade’s Law.
Passed in 2024 under the Victims and Prisoners Act, this law means:
- If a parent kills their partner or ex-partner, their parental responsibility is automatically suspended
No more additional court battles.
No more perpetrators controlling decisions from prison.
Expected to come into force in 2026, this law puts children’s safety first - where it should have always been.

New family law reform aims to better protect children from abusive parents.
The UK government’s proposed Courts and Tribunals Bill will remove the legal presumption that a child should have contact with both parents after separation. Instead, courts will start by asking what is truly in the child’s best interests, especially where there are concerns about abuse.

But, if you’ve had your flight cancelled, do you know where you stand?
Under UK law you are entitled to:
• A refund or re-routing - the airline must offer you your money back or an alternative flight.
• Care and assistance – meals, refreshments and accommodation if you’re left waiting.

Your messages don’t EVER disappear.
Texts. Emails. DMs. Voice notes. Even when you delete them.
In real life legal cases, such as divorces, employment disputes, investigations and claims, digital communications are routinely recovered and used as evidence. Cloud backups, screenshots, device downloads and third-party platforms mean your “private” messages often become permanent records.

Big UK driving law changes are coming in 2026.
Here are 4 you NEED to know:
- Driving tests - Learners will have to book their own tests and will only be allowed two changes per booking. This aims to cut test reselling and long waits.
- Digital driving licences - The UK will begin rolling out digital licences, letting drivers access licence details on their phone alongside the physical card.
- EVs will start paying car tax - Electric vehicles will no longer be exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty, meaning EV drivers will start paying annual road tax.
- Stricter automatic MOT & tax checks - More camera-based enforcement will automatically flag untaxed, uninsured or non-MOT compliant vehicles.

The UK has just passed a new law to crack down on puppy and kitten smuggling. The Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Act 2025 became law on 2 December 2025 and now means the following rules are in place:
- All import of puppies and kittens under six months old is banned
- Only up to five pets per vehicle can be imported for non-commercial sale
- Pets that are heavily pregnant or have been mutilated (e.g. cropped ears, declawed cats) cannot be imported
This shuts down cruel and illegal puppy smuggling networks, ensures pets are treated humanely and protects new pet owners from unknowingly buying animals from harmful breeders. A most welcomed change to our laws! -

Australia gets serious about kids and social media!
From the 10th December 2025, people under 16 in Australia will no longer be allowed to hold accounts on major social media platforms.
Platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, X and others must take reasonable steps to block under 16s or face fines of up to $50 million.

BIG changes ahead for the justice system
In the past week, the government announced it is proposing to scrap jury trials in England and Wales for most offences. Under the draft plan, only the most serious crimes (like murder, rape or manslaughter) would still go before a jury. Everything else could be decided by a single judge sitting alone under the new Ministry of Justice proposals.
Supporters say it could clear a backlog of over 78,000 cases and speed up justice, but critics warn it risks eroding a centuries old safeguard: ordinary people having their say in criminal verdicts.

Sadly AI generated child abuse images are surging. In fact, reports have more than doubled in a year.
To tackle this, the UK is introducing new powers under the Crime and Policing Bill to target the problem at the source. The law will allow regulators to hold certain AI developers accountable, making sure their models can’t be used to create harmful child abuse content.

From October 2025 Awaab’s Law has come into force to protect millions of tenants from unsafe damp and mould conditions.
Named after two-year-old Awaab Ishak, who tragically died due to prolonged exposure to mould in social housing, this new law will require landlords to take urgent action:
- Emergency health hazards must be fixed within 24 hours
- Damp and mould must be investigated within 10 working days, with repairs started immediately
- Landlords who don’t comply could face legal action and penalties

Scotland has proposed a new law to review all domestic abuse related deaths, including murders and suicides.
Under this new proposal, every death linked to domestic abuse will now trigger an independent review to uncover what went wrong, share lessons and drive changes to prevent future tragedies.

Labour plans to tighten the rules for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK.
The new proposals would:
-Extend the qualifying period from 5 to up to 10 years
- Require proof of work, NI contributions, no benefits or criminal record, strong English skills and even community contribution.

This month, the government has announced that Jess’s Rule will be rolled out across England to prevent avoidable deaths.
Jess’ Rule is a new GP safety law to prevent missed diagnoses. -
If a patient visits their GP three times with the same or worsening symptoms and still has no diagnosis, doctors must stop, reflect and reconsider. Ordering tests, referrals or in-person exams if needed.
The law is named after Jessica Brady, who sadly died of cancer at 27 despite 20 GP visits. This change aims to save lives by ensuring symptoms aren’t overlooked. -

Labour are considering a law change that could transform support for families.
Hugh’s Law would give parents of critically ill children paid leave and job protection from day one.
Currently, paid leave and job protection is only given to parents whose children fall unwell in the first 28 days after birth. After that, parents lose their entitlement to the financial support which allows them to stay at their child’s bedside, leaving families without vital support when they need it most.
A 2026 consultation is in progress, but families deserve action, not delay.
I say to our Government, advance the passing of this legislation as a priority and without delay.

Legal Update: Ban on Ninja Style Swords.
A new law is set to come into play that means from 1st August 2025, it will be a criminal offence to possess, sell, import or manufacture certain ninja style swords.
These are typically straight, double-edged blades between 14 and 24 inches. Possession could now lead to up to six months in prison, rising to two years under future plans.
What are your options if you own a sword like this?
- Check if your sword is covered under the new law
- Surrender it safely during the amnesty (1–31 July) at a designated police station
- Claim compensation (minimum £5 or more with proof of value) via the official form
You must act before the 1 st August 2025 to avoid legal consequences!

A big shift in UK abortion law coming!
For over 160 years, women in England & Wales could be prosecuted for ending their own pregnancy - especially after 24 weeks or without doctor approval.
That could now change…
MPs are set to vote next week to decriminalise abortion - so women would no longer face criminal charges for ending their own pregnancy.
The medical rules (like the 24 week limit) will still apply, but this move would stop using the law to punish women.
Backed by 130+ MPs, the vote is likely to pass — making it the biggest change in abortion law in 50 years.

If you are renting in the UK, your landlord must protect your deposit in a government approved scheme within 30 days of receiving it.
You should also get:
- Details of the scheme used
- Info on how to get your deposit back
- What to do if there’s a dispute
My TOP TIP: Always ask for the paperwork showing that your deposit is in a tenancy deposit scheme.
If your landlord fails to comply, you could be entitled to up to 3 x your deposit in compensation.

This month the government revealed a change to immigration law. Going forward, Asylum seekers will be denied the right to stay in the UK if they have been convicted of sexual offences.
Any offender sentenced to more than a year in prison, as well as terrorists and war criminals, can currently be refused asylum and deported under the Refugee Convention.
The government want to widen the scope to include anyone convicted of a crime that would see them put on the sex offenders register in the UK, regardless of the length of their sentence.

Thinking of, or going through a Divorce? Here’s What You NEED to Know!
Divorce can be tough, but knowing your rights can greatly assist you in the process, so that you can make informed decisions. Under our new No-Fault Divorce laws, you no longer have to prove blame to get a divorce in England & Wales.
Key Facts For You To Consider:
• You must be married for at least one year before applying for divorce.
• The process takes a minimum of 26 weeks (this may not include the settlement on all of the assets and liabilities of the marriage).
• Finances & Child Arrangements are separate issues -you should not finalise your divorce until the Court has approved a Settlement Agreement, even if you did not have to issue Court proceedings on the finances.
• If you and your ex can agree on a financial settlement, it should be made legally binding, (so that neither party can renegue) by drawing up a Consent Order and getting it sealed by the Court.
• Who gets what? Assets like the family home, pensions & savings don’t get split 50/50 automatically - it depends on fairness, needs & contributions.

If you are a student, then the Renters’ Rights Bill could benefit you!
This year, the bill sought to establish a new rule to protect students, will stop tenants from feeling pressured to sign a lease for a new house so early into an academic year, discouraging landlords from pressuring students into early commitments.

A new property law set to come into play this year could put an end to ‘bidding wars’ for those looking to rent a property.
The Renters’ Rights Bill will end the unfair practice of pitting renters against each other to get a higher price. Landlords and letting agents will be required to publish an asking rent for their property, and the new law will prohibit the agent from asking for, encouraging, or accepting any bids above this price.

Experts are calling for a new law to be introduced after research revealed that 85% of Britons have been dazzled or temporarily blinded by oncoming headlights from other vehicles.
The government is now calling for a safety assessment into how bright LED lights are affecting other drivers on the road.
In the same research, four in 10 believe that LED headlights should be banned entirely for their impact on other drivers during dark and foggy times.

A new law being considered by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez could see Brits dreaming of swapping our rainy isles for sunny Spain dealt a blow.
The PM announced that non-resident citizens from countries outside the European Union, including the UK, would face a big tax bill if they wanted to buy a home in the country. While Brits could still technically buy homes in Spain, the ultra-high tax rate would make it incredibly expensive, forcing all but the most determined buyers out of the market.

It’s official – as of April 2025, those who own an electric car will have to pay road tax!
Until now 100% battery electric cars have been treated to free road tax to help encourage adoption of the popular vehicle type. However, as electric cars have moved in to the mainstream, the government is set to scrap this rule.
How Much Would You Pay?
Electric cars registered on or after 1 April 2025 will need to pay the lowest first year rate of vehicle tax set at £10. From the second tax payment onwards, they will pay the standard rate of £195.
Electric cars registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025 will pay the standard rate of £195, and cars registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 will move to the first band that has a VED value, which will be £20.

Renting in 2025? Here’s What to Look Out For When Moving
If you’re planning to move house this year, here are the legal tips every tenant in England should know:
- Check Deposit Protection: Your landlord must protect your deposit in a government-backed scheme (TDS, DPS, or MyDeposits). Ask for the scheme details—it’s your legal right!
- Review the Tenancy Agreement: Read the fine print carefully. Ensure you understand break clauses, notice periods, and who’s responsible for maintenance.
- Inspect the Property Thoroughly: Before signing, check for damp, safety hazards, and maintenance issues. Take photos during the move-in inventory to avoid deposit disputes later.
- Be Aware of Rent Increases: Landlords can not raise your rent without proper notice and agreement. Familiarise yourself with rules under your tenancy type.

New Year, New You? Did you sign up for a new gym membership and now you’re regretting being tied in? For most memberships, if you sign up for a full year you will be liable to continue paying. However, there are a few loopholes that may mean you can cancel…
1. If you’re injured or have a serious illness – (you’ll need a doctor’s note) if you have had a serious health concern that means you cannot exercise, your gym will have to allow you to either pause or cancel your membership.
2.If you can’t afford to pay – if you’ve had a significant change in circumstances, for example you have lost your job or you find yourself in a lot of debt, then talk to the manager as this also will entitle you to cancel your membership.
3. If the contract terms are unfair – if the gym set a minimum contract term that is longer than one year, raised their prices significantly mid-contract or they auto renew without your permission, this could be considered as unfair and support your case in cancelling your membership.

MPs have voted in favour of a bill to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales. Whilst the bill will face months of further scrutiny, and should it go ahead, the End of Life Bill will give terminally ill people the right to choose to end their life. However, they must meet the following requirements:
-Be over 18 and live in England and Wales, and have been registered with a GP for at least 12 months
-Have the mental capacity to make the choice and be deemed to have expressed a clear, settled and informed wish, free from coercion or pressure
-Be expected to die within six months
-Make two separate declarations, witnessed and signed, about their wish to die
-Satisfy two independent doctors that they are eligible with at least seven days between each assessment.
Under the proposals, a High Court judge would have to rule each time a person makes a request to end their life. A patient would then have to wait 14 days after the ruling, allowing them to have a period of reflection.

Did you bag a bargain in the Black Friday sales but now it’s arrived, you’ve changed your mind?
Whilst some websites say orders are ‘final sale’, this isn’t the case when it comes to online retailers. Unlike buying an item in a bricks and mortar shop, online stores count as distance selling. This means that you are entitled to a refund within 14 days, even if you simply decided you don’t want or need the item.
However, there are some exceptions to be aware of when it comes to the 14-day cooling off period, including: perishables like food and flowers, passenger transport services, personalised or bespoke items and package holidays.

A new law has been passed in Scottish Parliament which will lower the minimum term served by prisoners who have been given short sentences.
Most prisoners serving less than four years will now be released after serving 40% of their sentence, rather than the previous 50%. This means between 260 and 390 inmates are now expected to be eligible for immediate release in February 2025.
The new rules do not apply to those sentenced for domestic abuse or sexual offences.
With prisons overcrowded and calls for rehabilitation running rife, this is a move that responds to these issues, but what do you make of this change? Should England follow in Scotland’s footsteps?

Last week the UK government published a consultation on new measures to tackle unfair subscription traps, which cost consumers £1.6 billion annually.
The consultation sets out proposals to make the refunds and cancellation processes simpler, with a requirement on retailers for greater transparency on their subscription programmes in a way that is proportionate to balance consumer rights, without placing unnecessary burdens on businesses.

If so, you need to know about The Carer’s Leave Bill.
As of April 2024, eligible employees are now entitled to one week of unpaid leave per year to care for a dependent, such as an elderly relative or a person with a disability. This leave can be taken flexibly (in half or full days) for planned and foreseen caring commitments.

In the last week, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opened an investigation into mattress brand, Emma over concerns that some of its online sales practices – such as discounts and urgency claims, including countdown timers and high demand prompts – may mislead consumers.

A NEW law introduced last month will mean that tech-savvy owners of Bitcoin and other digital assets will benefit from greater legal protection.
The Property (Digital Assets etc) Bill, introduced in Parliament, will mean that for the first time in British history, digital holdings including cryptocurrency,
non-fungible tokens such as digital art, and carbon credits can be considered as personal property under the law. Previously, digital belongings were not definitively included in this scope leaving owners in a legal grey area if their assets were interfered with.
The new law will give legal protection to owners and companies against fraud and scams, while helping judges deal with complex cases where digital holdings are disputed or form part of settlements, for example in divorce cases.

Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed that a “Hillsborough Law” will be introduced in Parliament before the next anniversary of the 1989 football stadium tragedy. A terrace crush at an FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield on 15 April 1989 resulted in the deaths of 97 Liverpool fans. The law, named after the disaster, will introduce a legal duty of candour on public bodies and it will make organisations more accountable. Officials or organisations that mislead or obstruct investigations could potentially face criminal sanctions.

From next month, the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act will come into force which will place a duty on employers to take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent sexual harassment of its employees.
This means employers should be proactive and systematic in how they prevent and tackle sexual harassment at work, this would include:
- Policies and procedures: Employers must have written policies and guidance to define sexual harassment, give examples of what it is and outline everyone’s responsibilities for preventing and tackling it.
- Training for all staff: There should be regular training for all staff, regardless of seniority, so that they understand what sexual harassment is and what their role is in preventing it.
- Reports and disciplinary powers: There should be clear reporting channels for complaints, with a set of steps which must be taken to address allegations of sexual harassment, including investigations, disciplinary and grievance processes.

Do you think homework for children should be banned?
Well, that thought could soon become a reality in California as the US State is said to be close to passing a rule to outlaw homework, in order to limit stress for pupils and parents. The Healthy Homework Act, which requires teachers to consider if homework requires parental support and access to technology, has passed both chambers but awaits approval from the state governor.
This follows on from Poland who banned homework for kids in the first to third grades. In grades four to eight, homework is now optional and doesn’t count towards a grade.

Were you one of the hundreds of thousands of people trying to get their hands on Oasis tickets? Then you may be interested to know that Ticketmaster are under fire for potentially breaching consumer laws by applying ‘dynamic pricing’.
Dynamic pricing meant that some fans queued all day only to find that £135 standing tickets had risen to £355 when the time came to confirm their purchase. Fans were left with a choice of missing out or paying more with only minutes to decide.
Whilst this isn’t illegal, Ticketmaster may have breached consumer regulations by not making it clear to fans that the basic standing ticket price might increase. In addition, the government has announced that it would include dynamic pricing in a review of ticketing that was due to focus on Labour’s plans to ban “rip-off” resale sites.

Gadgets like baby monitors, televisions and speakers that are linked to the internet can often pose a risk because cyber criminals use them to hack home networks.
However, a new law coming into play called the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regime, will mean that manufacturers of these items need to follow stricter rules if they want to sell “smart” gadgets in the UK.
The new law brings three new requirements:
· password procedures must be more secure, including ensuring any set by the manufacturer are not left blank or using easy-to-guess choices like “12345”
· that there is clarity around how to report “bugs” or security problems that arise
· that manufacturers and retailers inform customers how long they will receive support, including software updates
Failure to meet these minimum requirements will trigger fines for the manufacturers.

UK driving laws could be changing.
According to plans from experts, new rules could be introduced that would require drivers to carry several vital safety items in their vehcile. This includes a first aid kit, reflective jackets, warning triangles and a fire extinguisher.
A number of countries including Greece, Romania and Croatia already require drivers to carry a first aid kit, whilst Switzerland, Austria and France enforce the need for warning triangles.

Jeremy Clarkson has managed to change the law for farmers, so there is now ‘officially’ a so called ‘Clarkson’s Clause’ amongst our UK laws, thanks to the efforts of the TV presenter and his Amazon Prime Video series, Clarkson’s Farm.
From the 21st May 2024, farmers no longer need to apply for planning permission to convert unused buildings into new homes or shops. The new law will give farmers across England greater freedom to diversify and grow their business.

New restaurants, public toilets, shopping centres and offices in England will be required to have separate male and female toilets under proposed legislation.
The law will affect new and non-residential buildings as part of a push “ending the rise” of gender-neutral toilets.
A consultation highlighted concerns from women, elderly and disabled people who felt unfairly disadvantaged by toilets being converted into gender neutral facilities sharing cubicles and sinks. But transgender rights groups argue gender-neutral toilets can protect trans people from discrimination.

Last week, a NEW law was announced that will force manufacturers to protect consumers from hackers and cyber criminals.
The new rules mean that any device which has internet connectivity must, from now on, follow a new set of minimum requirements on passwords.

The creation of sexually explicit “deepfake” images is going to be made a criminal offence in England and Wales.
Under the legislation, anyone making explicit images of an adult without their consent, will face a criminal charges and an unlimited fine.
It will apply regardless of whether the creator of an image intended to share it or not, and if the image is shared widely then the perpetrator could face jail.

Did you know that UK businesses are now required to pay overseas workers coming to the UK on a Skilled Worker visa significantly more?
The salary threshold for those arriving in the UK on such visa has now increased by a staggering 48% - from £26,200 to £38,700.

Scotland has revised its Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021 which now cites “stirring up hatred” relating to age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity or being intersex, as a formally recognised crime which could incur a prison sentence.
Under the new law, a person who commits an offence, would be doing so if “a reasonable person would consider to be threatening or abusive,” with the intention of stirring up hatred based on the protected characteristics.
Stirring up hatred based on race, colour, nationality, or ethnicity was already illegal in Great Britain under the Public Order Act 1986, however, in an attempt to streamline the criminal law in Scotland, that too is now part of the Hate Crime Act.

Last week the first person was jailed for cyber-flashing in the UK; it is now a crime.

On the 4th March, the government revealed plans to make justice more accessible for innocent people wronged by powerful companies.
It’s believed that the Lord Chancellor, Alex Chalk, will introduce a new law to make it easier for members of the public to secure the financial backing of third parties when launching complex claims against wealthy corporations with sizeable legal teams, which they could otherwise ill-afford. The proposed laws will make it a legal requirement for anyone in regulated activity relating to children in England, including teachers or healthcare professionals, to report any child abuse that they are aware of. Those who fail to report child sexual abuse will face being barred from working with young people.
In addition, anyone who actively protects child sexual abusers – by intentionally blocking others from reporting or covering up the crime – could go to prison for 7 years.

Did you know that a lawsuit being brought against Facebook owner, Meta on behalf of 45 million people has been given the green light in the UK?
The suit, claims that Facebook created conditions of access that require significant access to data on non-Facebook platforms such as Instagram. It’s proposed that Facebook abused its market dominance within the social media industry to make access to the platform a “take-it-or-leave-it” offer, as a condition of access is giving Facebook permission to use “Off-Facebook” data.
Meta has dismissed this claim and confirmed they will defend themselves.

Did you know that romance scams rose by over a fifth in 2023?
These scams often involve fraudsters using fake social media pictures and profiles to lure their victims. They may make excuses for not being able to meet in person or to turn their camera on, but they will ask the victim for money under the pretence of needing it for family issues, bills or to travel to meet the victim. Not only do the victims often lose money, but they can also be left feeling emotionally manipulated and distraught!
Want to protect yourself? Here’s THREE ways to help you steer clear of these scams;
Never send money to someone you’ve never physically met, or give your bank details, no matter what story they give you.
If they give you a picture, try doing a reverse image search online, which will tell you if the photo has been lifted from the internet.
Do not share your personal details with someone that you’ve never met. Keep your username on any dating sites generic to avoid any risk of a fraudster using this information to identify your location.

As of the 30th January 2024, New York confirmed it will expand its legal definition of rape to include various forms of non-consensual sexual contact, under a bill signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul.
The new definition will make it easier for rape victims to bring cases forward to prosecute perpetrators, and the law will apply to sexual assaults committed on or after the 1st September.

Have you ever been refused a replacement or a repair on a faulty item because your warranty has run out?
Well, I have some good news for you! You have the legal right, up to six years (five in Scotland) after the purchase, for a faulty good to be repaired or replaced, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The provider of the guarantee is in most cases the manufacturer, rather than the retailer, so be sure to contact them with the issue.
Lastly, for most guarantees to be valid, you would have to fill out a registration card at the time of your purchase, and sent it back to the manufacturer, so don’t forget to do this to protect your item!

New rules could come into place to help make rental properties safer. In December 2020, two-year-old Awaab Ishak died after prolonged exposure to mould in his housing association flat in Rochdale. Now, a new law could help to prevent this tragedy ever happening again.
The new proposal will force landlords to investigate hazards within 14 days, start fixing within a further seven days, and make emergency repairs within 24 hours.

Thank goodness that at long last the slaughter and sale of dogs for their meat is to become illegal in South Korea after MPs backed a new law.
The legislation which is set to come into force by 2027 will end the centuries-old practice of humans eating dog meat.
Dog meat stew is considered a delicacy among older South Koreans, but the meat has fallen out of favour with young people and, of course, causes uproar in other countries.

Music to my ears that 2024 will see procedural changes to flexible working requests.
These edits to the law will allow employees to make flexible working requests without being required to set out how their request may affect their employer’s business. From 6 April 2024, employees will also be able to make a flexible working request from day one of employment, rather than waiting the 26 weeks previously required.

Planning your Christmas break and worried about train strikes derailing your trip?
Well, you’ll be happy to know that the government has introduced new legislation which requires 40% of train services to run during strikes.
The Minimum Service Levels legislation will allow the equivalent of 40% of railway timetables to operate as normal with certain priority routes to remain open. It follows the government's Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act that it passed in January, which gave ministers the power to set minimum service levels across multiple sectors.
Let’s hope this makes travel that bit smoother this season!

Rents are rising at their fastest rate since records began in 2016. But with a quarter of tenants struggling to pay, what are your rights?
If you have an assured shorthold tenancy in England, then the landlord:
• Can usually only put up the rent once a year
• Must give at least one month's notice
• Any rent rise must be fair and realistic, in line with local properties
If you have a "fixed" agreement, then the landlord:
• Normally can't put the rent up until the fixed term ends - unless the contract has a rent review clause
• Must give at least one month's notice
• If the fixed term is a year, landlords must give six months' notice
Know your rights and become your own legal advocate!

Did you know that Amazon could be in contempt of UK laws when it comes to parcel thefts?
At present, the online giant insists that customers whose orders fail to arrive need to submit a police report in order to qualify for a refund. But this doesn’t stack up, and Amazon could be in breach of consumer rights. Under consumer law, it is the responsibility of the retailer to ensure purchasers receive their goods and liaise with the courier if there is a problem.

Couples who are not married and buying a home together, can sensibly have in place what is called a Declaration Of Trust. These declarations record how much each person has contributed to the purchase of the property, and importantly who should receive what percentage of the property, in the unfortunate event of a separation.
However, did you know that a Declaration Of Trust could be rendered invalid if you do get married? They can be overridden by Matrimonial Law, which means it could be called in to question during a divorce and in Court proceedings, should you split.
A post-nuptial agreement is something that you may want to consider, which is a document that would record assets ‘after’ the marriage. My top tip is to make sure that a legal professional drafts the document, and that it is revisited at least every 3 years in to the marriage to keep it up-to-date.

Bonfire night is just around the corner, so here are four legal facts to keep in mind…
1. Throwing fireworks is illegal – you could have to pay a £5,000 fine.2. It’s illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy or possess ‘adult’ fireworks.
3. You must not set off or throw fireworks, including sparklers, in the street or other public places.
4. It's against the law for anyone to set off fireworks between the hours of 11pm and 7am, except for on Bonfire Night, when the cut off time is midnight, and on New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut off time is 1am.

Can my landlord refuse to let me have a pet?
This is a question I get asked time and time again, so here are my tips to help you understand where you stand legally!
If your contract says pets aren’t allowed - The Consumer Rights Act 2015 which prohibits “unfair terms” in a contract. This means a blanket ban on keeping pets in a tenancy agreement might be struck out, if your contract is challenged in court.
If your tenancy agreement says your landlord needs to provide permission – the landlord’s permission should not be unreasonably refused.
If your tenancy agreement doesn’t mention pets – it will be harder for landlord to argue that pets are not allowed.
If you do keep a pet, landlords cannot charge a fee or ask for a higher deposit as this would breach the deposit cap requirements in the Tenant Fees Act 2019.
Bear in mind that a contract can prevent you from keeping a pet if it is against the Lease of the property to do so.
Empowering yourself to understand the laws of our land is so important. I hope this helps renters out there!
